rcvd a zipped attchmt called Tell_finder and opened it. Had a smiley face with it. Have I been hacked? virus?

The smiley face attachement called Tell_finder, was zipped. It came from a friend who said that he did not email it. The next morning, another friend of mine said that I emailed it to him, I DID’NT. I could not delete the file because it said that it was being used by another user. 24 hours later, the smiley face disapeared from the file name and allowed me to delete everything associated with the program from computer. The only other thing that it did, was change my homepage to an Iranian site that I can not read. I am very concerned about this because I work in Iraq with the Military and I am afraid that some vital classified material might have been hacked from my computer. Has my Yahoo email been comprimised? My Yahoo Messenger? What do I do now? Should I change my email address? Password? Someone please help.

more than likely u been infected by a worm, that is usin ur email account to spread itself. ur best bet is to get "windows defender" it’s an anti spyware program i think it’s the best one out there for them worms and the internet explorer hackin programs. run a quick scan and it will show u the files that needs to be deleted with the option of deletin em for u. and cosider gettin an antivirus program i would recomend McAfee Security Center it’s the one i use.

There is always a chance that something could get into your computer, especially if you unzipped this unknown message. I could not find anything on this, either as a trojan, spyware or a virus. There are several things you should do.
    1. Check in your programs to see if there is something new that you didn’t add: Click on Start, Settings, Control Panel, Add/Remlove Programsand the Show updates box at the top. When the list loads, look carefully at all the programs. If there is something you don’t recognize, uninstall it and restart the computer.
    2. Depending on how long ago this happened, if you are running Windows XP, do a System Restore back to a day or two before this happened. Click on Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools then System Restore. You can only pick a date that is bolded. This will remove anything between the restore date and today.
    3. If you aren’t running good antivirus and spyware programs, you need to do that immediately. I use Avast, because it protects my email as well as my computer. (I use Outlook as well as Yahoo mail.) If there is a virus, Avast will find it quickly. If Yahoo mail is your only email, then you are limited to what you can buy, essentially Norton, which can cause more problems than it solves. But you can get Ad-Aware and SpyBot, both free from download.com. Install and run both of them, making sure you immunize your computer with SpyBot. If there is spyware and malware, these two will find them. When running Ad-Aware the first time, do a full system scan of everything. Takes a while, but it’s well worth it.
    4. Changing your Yahoo email address won’t help if your friends and fellow soldiers use it. Someone spoofed your address and your friends’ address, and that’s how they got to both of you.

Good luck, I hope this helps!

I suggest that, better immediately , you adopt a system restore operation. It is safe and the problems can be rectified. You have to carefully select the date of restore. Ensure that the PC was functioning normally on the selected date for restoration. If you want to know an effective procedure for system restore please visit the following site.

    After successful repairs
Delete all temp internet files including off line content, delete all temp files . Go to add/remove progras and delete all programs that are not required. (These can be done in many ways including disc clean up option) Then defrg the PC.
If you are successful then, select a standard antivirus and an anti spy ware and install in your PC so that the problem does not occur again. There are a number of antivirus and anti spyware in the market. Some are free some are to be purchased. Please visit the following site and select a suitable free antivirus.

You can visit the following site, if you want a more effective antivirus . You have to pay for it!

You also try to select and install a suitable anti spyware from the following link to protect the Pc against spyware attacks.

After succesful installation of the protective wares create a system restore point.
